If iTunes is open when I connect my iPod, basically the same thing happens. If I try to use iTunes Windows will crash immediately; if I leave it alone, Windows will crash in awhile.

There are also some minor issues with playback on the iPod when not connected to the computer at all. It often gets stuck on a certain screen for ~5-15 seconds, sometimes longer. While it’s frozen, any button clicks go unnoticed. Eventually the screen fades to the “shaded” screen you get when music’s been playing for awhile and you haven’t clicked any buttons. From there, I can once again click buttons & manipulate the menu. This seems to happen especially when I’m doing a lot of button clicking/navigating. There is also sometimes a lag between clicking on a song to play it, or using the fast forward or rewind buttons, and getting the song I am trying to select to actually play. Sometimes it fast forwards like I want to after the lag; sometimes it has to fade again and I have to go from there. This issue started as far as I can remember about the same time as the connectivity issues, got worse up until I “Restored,” then got much better, and has been slowly getting worse since then.

I have tried:
-restarting computer and iPod and every combination thereof
-”reset” iPod – holding down menu and select buttons after toggling the hold button until the Apple appears. Oh have I reset. A billion times have I reset.
-different USB ports.
-different computers.
-different USB cords.
-other iPods on my computer: they all work just fine.
-uninstall/reinstall of iTunes. Complete. Several. Times.
-different versions of iTunes. The problem has persisted long enough that iTunes has gone through many, many annoying updates.
-putting iPod into Disk Mode: iPod appears in My Computer as usual, I can open files through there just as I can when iPod is not in Disk Mode. When I try to open iTunes, it gives me some false hope by letting my iPod appear in the sidebar, but then I just get the “Verifying iPod” and the “busy” bar on the top of iTunes, and the “busy” mouse clicker button when I have my mouse over iTunes. Eventually, you guessed it, Windows crashes.
-making sure my OS is updated. It is. Really. I checked. windowsupdate.com and all that. Got it.
-I run Disk Cleanup and defrag my computer on a regular basis.

and finally:
-”Restore” aka Reformatting the iPod. HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS OMG. This did actually fix the problem – for about a month or two. Then back to the same. It took 2 overnight-running sessions on my computer to first, add all my music back to iTunes (I dislike iTunes and use WMP as my main music player, on the few ocassions when I actually use my PC for music), and then sync that with my iPod. (I have the manual sync setting selected, obviously.)

I’ve also yelled at it. A lot. Unfortunately this also has proved ineffective.

So my questions are:
1) Is there any way to fix it?
2) How?
3) Is there anywhere that will give me $ $ /trade in value for an iPod like this? It’s in good condition physically, only a couple minor scratches.
