How do i take care of my bamboo plant?

My friend just got me a little bamboo plant and i was wondering what I have to do to keep it healthy and growing. Its in a small round pot that is filled with small rocks. Could you please tell me how often I should water it, and if I should keep it in the sun or in the shade.
The stock is about five inches long total. Two inches are submerged in rock and water. It has to (branches?) of leaves coming off of it which look healthy but around the stock where the leaves are growing from are slight brownish rings. Also the top of the stock is brown? Is this normal? and if not what should i do?

Known for centuries as Lucky Bamboo, the plant is not a bamboo at all (botanical name: Dracaena) but a resilient member of the lily family that grows in the dark, tropical rain-forests of Southeast Asia and Africa.
Not hard to take care of change water once a week, Miracle-gro makes liquid plant food that is the easiest way to fertilize the bamboo. Just a couple of drops once a month will be enough. But not necessary. They live in low light very well. I have mine in a bathroom with no window.

Here is my favorite site for bamboo, it has all the information you will need.

this is normal. shouldn’t do anything with it. you can change the water once a week. the plant thrives well indoor without much sunlight. it is pretty easy to care for . good luck with your plant.
